Effectiveness: | | Moderately Effective |
Side effects: | | Moderate Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | post-surgical pain |
Dosage & duration: | | 5-10 mg taken approx every 6-8 hrs for the period of 5 days |
Other conditions: | | bowels slow to function after surgery |
Other drugs taken: | | stool softener, ibuprofin, acetaminophen | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | The pain was definitely reduced, from high discomfort to relatively low discomfort, so long as I wasn't moving. It also helped me to sleep some of the time. |
Side effects: | | During the second and third day, it seemed to increase my post-surgical nausea. Overall, in addition to drowsiness, I experienced a lot of dizziness. I'm not sure whether or not it affected my bowels returning to normal function. |
Comments: | | At first I was given the oxycodone intravenously, with a button allowing me to choose when I wanted a dose (don't remember the amount) but limited in total amount and frequency (up to every 15 minutes, I think.) Afterwards, I took it in pill form. After several days I decided the side effects were too strong and got a hydrocodone prescription, which had similar but more mild side effects. In retrospect, I wish that acupunture had been available; when I experienced an auricular 5-needle protocol several weeks later, I found the residual pain I had was immediately reduced, with none of the side effects. |

Effectiveness: | | Considerably Effective |
Side effects: | | Extremely Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | pain after surgery |
Dosage & duration: | | 10mg taken every 6 hours for the period of 1 day |
Other conditions: | | brusing and swelling |
Other drugs taken: | | Ibuprofen | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | The drug was prescribed for pain, and it worked to dull post op pain. |
Side effects: | | The drug made me terribly constipated, which in my opinion, negated the value of the drug. The strain to eliminate was very painful considering the recent surgery. |
Comments: | | After 1 day of oxycontin and the ensuing constipation, I switched to 800 mg of ibuprofen. While not as effective for the pain, the constipation was alleviated. Overall, the ibuprofen was better for me. |

Effectiveness: | | Considerably Effective |
Side effects: | | Mild Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | post surgical pain |
Dosage & duration: | | 10mg taken 2 times per day for the period of one week |
Other conditions: | | none |
Other drugs taken: | | none | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Able to tolerate the pain |
Side effects: | | Loss of appetite, dizzy |
Comments: | | Following a nasal reconstruction and bone graft to
my nasal bridge pain relief was prescribed. My nose
was crushed in an accident.
I did not think that it would be necessary, however
the procedure turned out to be extremely painful for
several days. The pain medication allowed me to tolerate the pain, however it made it impossible for me to function normally. All I could do was sleep and remain in a haze until the pain diminished |

Effectiveness: | | Considerably Effective |
Side effects: | | Extremely Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | back pain |
Dosage & duration: | | 10mg taken 2/day for the period of 4 yrs |
Other conditions: | | degenrated disk |
Other drugs taken: | | Percocet imovane lorazapam | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | It provided me Pain releif that enabled me to get up in the morning and pain releif that helped with cramps and pain while sleeping at night. I think it only blocked the pain receptor in my brain but didn't actually provide a cure for the main problem. It was like a mask that may have caused more damagae in the end |
Side effects: | | I became severely addicted to the drug. With flu like symptoms when out of meds. I became dependant on the meds everyday to function and because it was working for enabling me to go about my day I didn't look for a proper treatment. In the end I wouldn't say that these pain medication do anything but mask the initial problem and my Dr considered the problem solved and didn't seek an alternate method of helping me long term |
Comments: | | Take one pill 2 times a day |

Effectiveness: | | Highly Effective |
Side effects: | | Moderate Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | Severe and chronic back pain |
Dosage & duration: | | 10mg taken three times a day for the period of Over 10 years |
Other conditions: | | High cholesteral |
Other drugs taken: | | Lyrica | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Truly allows me to function. I work in a mentally demanding and stressful job. Without this medication, I would not be able to work, let alone do much of anything else. |
Side effects: | | Yes, there are side effects. Constipation is an issue that requires trying different means to address. Tradition treatments didn't help, but odd ones that I stumbled on have - like eating raw brazil nuts; now it's home-made chex mix. NutriSystems food (with high fiber and fillers) really works.
There is a mild, physical addiction property. Over the ten years that I have used this medication, I have slowly reduced by dosage from 50 mg down to 30 daily. There was nauseousness and sweating, but I got through it.
When people say that prescription medicine isn't safe, I can only reply that my choices are either laying in bed because the pain is to great, or taking the medication and being able to function. I am still limited in my physical activity, but I'm working and not constantly focused on the pain. |
Comments: | | I take the Oxycontin three times a day - morning, lunch and dinner. It is recommended to take on a full stomach, though I've never noticed an issue when I haven't. If I take my regular dose one to two hours after it's due, my back pain is very severe, so I know it's working. |

In the beginning I was advized to take the drug 1 hour before the previous one wore off as it can take up to 1 hour for it to work. The pain however always did go away and therefore relieving me of it and making me feel comfortable again. |
Side effects: | | After using the drug for a while I was becoming more and more dependant on it. Therefore I was becomming addicted to this drug as I was depending on it to relieve my pain. I also noticed that while taking this drug I was becoming constipated where in the past that has never been an issue for me. |
Comments: | | This medication was prescribed to me following my knee arthroplasty. I had a surgery done on my knee where the joints have been replaced. following the surgery I had severe pain and so the doctor as opposed to morphine prescribed OxyContin. I was taking this drug 3 times a day and later 2 to 3 times depending on my pain. The drug worked very well and I was satisfied with it. |

Condition / reason: | | chronic nerve pain from back surgery |
Dosage & duration: | | 80mg taken 1 every 12hr for the period of 4years |

Other drugs taken: | | omepersol and allopurinol | | Reported Results |

Side effects: | | constipation which can be relieved by stool softener which is a fair trade off to me. another effect as I found out is that it dries out your mouth and causes gum disease and now all my teeth need to be removed |
Comments: | | After 2 back surgeries doctor tried numerous pain relief options and none seemed to work used physical therapy to strengthen lower back and 1 tablet 80mg twice daily to alleviate pain |
