Strep throat is caused by group A streptococcal infection. Zmax (azithromycin) is effective against some group A streptococci and in many instances can sure a strep throat. But, like with any antibiotic, there are resistant strains that won't be killed by Zmax.

The best course of action is the have a throat culture with antibiotic sensitivity test. This will confirm the diagnosis of strep throat (otherwise, e.g. if this is a virus, antibiotics won't help) and will indicate which antibiotics will work.
