Amoxil, a brand of amoxicillin (a penicillin-like antibiotic) can work for many strains of bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. However, other classes of antibiotics may have a broader spectrum when it comes to UTI (e.g. sulfa drugs such as Bactrim). The best strategy is to get a urine culture tested against various antibiotics to determine the optimal one. Also, there are other considerations when choosing an antibiotic, such as antibiotic allergies and other health conditions. You should discuss antibiotic choice with your doctor in the context of your medical history.
