I don't know if zarontin was ever studied in small children or can be given to small children.

Generally speaking, there are very few choices of drugs effective for absence seizures. There seem to be mainly two drugs used for this condition: ethosuximide (Zarontin) and valporic acid. Valporic acid seems to have worse side effects profile than ethosuximide (Zarontin) . That said, I don't know if either of the two is approved for use in small children.
