Atropine is an anticholinergic, i.e. it blocks the action of acetyl-choline (a neurotransmiter) on the so-called muscarinic receptors than many organs have. This inhibits a number of key neural pathways, and leads to variety of effects on the body, including dilation of the pupils, increased heart rate, reduced salivation and other secretions, etc..
