Relafen (nabumetone) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It belong to a new generation of NSAIDs, the so-called COX-2 selective NSAIDs, which tend to produce fewer gastrointestinal side-effects.

Kidney damage, however, is a concern with all NSAIDs, even with the newer COX-2 selective ones. ( See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15847359 )

Generally, people with impaired kidney function and/or at risk for kidney damage should avoid NSAID-s. If there is no alternative, they should only used NSAID-s for the shortest possible duration, at the lowest possible dose and under the supervision of a physician who monitors their kidney function.
