BMA Scotland "Disappointed" As Taskforce Rejects Changes To Organ Donation System

BMA Scotland today [Monday 17 November 2008] expressed its disappointment over the Organ Donation Taskforce's recommendations not to proceed to an "opt-out" system for organ donation. However, the Taskforce did recognise the importance of improving organ donation rates. According to current figures for Scotland, there are currently more than 800 people waiting for a donor organ. In 2007, only 271 organ transplants took place.

With the number of patients in need of organ transplants on the rise, an increasing number of patients are turning to unconventional sources for organs. Individuals are willing to donate their kidneys for financial incentive, particularly in developing countries where the poverty rate is high, resulting in numerous reports of human trafficking as a source of organs.

A fungus called microsporidia that causes chronic diarrhea in AIDS patients, organ transplant recipients and travelers has been identified as a member of the family of fungi that have been discovered to reproduce sexually. A team at Duke University Medical Center has proven that microsporidia are true fungi and that this species most likely undergoes a form of sexual reproduction during infection of humans and other host animals.
