NAPHCON® FORTE (naphazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution USP), 0.1%
NAPHCON® FORTE (Naphazoline Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP), 0.1% is a sterile preparation. Naphazoline HCl, an ocular vasoconstrictor, is an imidazoline derivative sympathomimetic amine. It occurs as a white, odorless crystalline powder having a bitter taste and is freely soluble in water and in alcohol.
NAPHCON® FORTE (Naphazoline Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP), 0.1% is indicated for use as a topical ocular vasoconstrictor.

Intranasal lidocaine plus naphazoline nitrate improves surgical conditions and perioperative analgesia in septorhinoplasty surgery. [2009.02] BACKGROUND: Septorhinoplasty is a traumatic procedure that is associated with epistaxis and postoperative pain. The primary objective of this randomized double-blind controlled trial was to determine whether intranasal 5% lidocaine plus naphazoline decreases postoperative pain and lessens the use of rescue analgesics... CONCLUSIONS: Intranasal lidocaine plus naphazoline is a simple and efficient technique for decreasing intra- and postoperative pain and for lessening rescue analgesic requirements in the postoperative period after septorhinoplasty. Toxic plasma concentrations of lidocaine were not reached.
A comparison of the clinical efficacy of pheniramine maleate/naphazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution and olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution in the conjunctival allergen challenge model. [2005.05] BACKGROUND: The signs and symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include ocular redness and itching. Two treatment options currently indicated for acute ocular allergic reaction are pheniramine maleate 0.3%/naphazoline hydrochloride 0.025% ophthalmic solution, an over-the-counter antihistamine/vasoconstrictor combination; and olopatadine hydrochloride 0.1% ophthalmic solution, a prescription antihistamine/mast cell stabilizer. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to compare, at onset of action, the relative effectiveness of pheniramine/naphazoline and olopatadine, when administered before conjunctival allergen challenge (CAC), using the ocular allergy index (OAI) as the primary end point... CONCLUSION: In this patient sample, studied in a CAC model of onset of action, prophylactic pheniramine/naphazoline was more effective than olopatadine and placebo in alleviating the signs and symptoms of the acute ocular allergic reaction, as measured by the OAI.

Acute pulmonary edema associated with naphazoline ingestion. [2008.03] In published reports of naphazoline ingestion, clinical effects are hypertension, bradycardia, pallor, diaphoresis, and respiratory distress.Since naphazoline stimulates the peripheral alpha-2 adrenergic receptor, we speculate that intense vasoconstriction may have elevated cardiac afterload and left atrial-ventricular blood volume and caused acute pulmonary edema.

Efficacy of Nasal Naphazoline Hydrocloride + Pheniramine Maleate + Panthenol Compared With Naphazoline Hydrocloride in the Symptomatic Control of Nasal Congestion and Nasopharyngeal [Not yet recruiting]
The common cold is a major cause of nasal obstruction and reaches children and adults twice
or more times a year. At the moment, there is no cure for the common cold, and therefore the
reduction of symptoms is the focus of treatment.
The study was designed to parallel distribution, with two equal groups, with one group will
receive treatment with a combination of naphazoline hydrocloride + pheniramine maleate +
panthenol and the other will receive treatment with naphazoline hydrocloride.

The Effect of Oral Guaifenesin on Pediatric Chronic Rhinitis: A Pilot Study [Recruiting]
This is a 14-day, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group, masked clinical trial of
oral guaifenesin for the therapy of Chronic Rhinitis in 36 children between the ages of 7
and 18 years. The study investigates the effectiveness of guaifenesin in the relief of nasal
symptoms in children with CRS using the sinonasal 5 survey (SN-5) in comparison to nasal
airway volume, and biophysical properties of nasal secretion. The investigators hypothesize
that Guaifenesin use over a period of 14 days improves subjective nasal complaints in
pediatric patients with chronic rhinitis and nasal congestion, as measured by the SN-5
survey compared to use of placebo. There will be an observed improvement in nasal volume and
cross-sectional area following use of guaifenesin, and nasal secretions will have more
favorable mucociliary and sneeze clearability compared to use of placebo.
Comparison Between Dexchlorpheniramine and Dexchlorpheniramine/Pseudoephedrine/Guaifenesin in Respiratory Infections [Not yet recruiting]
Patients with allergic rhinitis frequently present exacerbation of the atopic symptoms
during viral infections of the upper respiratory tract. Also, allergic rhinitis makes the
mucosa more reactive to infectious agents and potentiates mucus production.
The combination of dexchlorpheniramine, pseudoephedrine and guaifenesin elicits
antihistaminic, decongestant and expectorant effects. The study hypothesizes is that this
product is superior to dexchlorpheniramine alone in the relief of allergic symptoms and in
promoting mucus elimination in atopic patients with viral infections of the upper
respiratory tract.
