LUND, Sweden (MedPage Today) -- A mouthwash containing the probiotic species Lactobacillus plantarum 299 was as effective as chlorhexidine at eliminating disease-causing pathogens from the upper respiratory tract, researchers here said.

Pneumonia Death Less Likely In Statin Users

According to an article published in the October 27 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, people who were hospitalized with pneumonia were less likely to die within 90 days afterward if they took cholesterol-lowering statins before hospitalization. In the last ten years, the United States and Europe have seen a 20 to 50% increase in pneumonia hospitalization rates. In addition, some 10 to 15% of pneumonia patients die from the disease.

In most cases, the bugs are harmless, but an antibiotic-resistant form of S. aureus is becoming more common. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus, or MRSA, can be difficult to treat, but there are ways to avoid infection, reports the Harvard Men's Health Watch. S. aureus can lead to pneumonia if it gets into the lungs.
